Clay Sculptures for the Holidays!

Team 7-1 finished their clay sculptures just in time to take home for the holidays.
They did a fabulous job sculpting an animal in an enviroment by layering slab, and coil. Students learned clay techniques such as score, slip & smooth. The landscapes show foreground, middleground and background. Great Job Team 7-1!!

Clay Sculptures: Hanging Plaques

Students worked very hard over the past three weeks to finish their clay 'hanging plaque' sculptures. I am very excited about the outcome. They focused on creating a landscaped that showed foreground, middleground, and background. Students used tools to create texture, and color to show value.

Students enjoyed sculpting a clay slab that showed foreground, middleground and background. While waiting for the sculptures to fire, students played http://www.freerice.com/ and earned won grains of rice to help end hunger in 3rd world countries. We are also donating food to a local food pantry. Food Drive ends June 12th!!~To remember this event we are sculpting papier-mache bowls. They symbolize the empty bowls around the world. The bowls are inspired by music. Watch the video!!

Happy Earth Day! To celebrate Earth Day our team went to see the Disney Nature movie EARTH at a local theatre during the morning. During the afternoon the students divided up into groups to clean Mother Earth. Students worked on cleaning trails, nearby outdoor ropes course, and my group of students walked to a Senior Facility to garden. Our flowers were donated by Hewitt's Greenhouse and Walmart Supercenter. Students enjoyed spending time with the men and women of the Senior home. A good time was had by all. Thanks kids for caring so much about the Earth!!!

Metamorphosis Value Drawing

Students learned about value and drawing from observation. Students were asked to choose from a collection of small items and were given the challenge to 'morph' the object into either an animal or a food item. Students worked with pencil, eraser and tortillion smudge tools.

DIY Scratch Art Collage

Students spent a week creating their own scratch art collage.

Steps to create Scratch Art:
1. Use crayon to color construction paper - Make sure crayon is thick and no paper is showing through.
2. Make Black Paint mixture by using Black Tempra paint and adding a small amount of dish soap.
3. Paint over the crayon and let dry.
4. Meanwhile find an interesting Focal Point by clipping from magazines. (or using a self portrait)
5. Glue down collage with glue stick and use tooth picks or carving tools to scratch away black paint.

Students focused on Pattern and Movement.

Artifical flowers, vases, old jewelry, old shoes/boots, barrels, ribbons, bottles, sports equipment, electrical objects, umbrellas, costumes, antique clothes, hats, skulls, toys/dolls, musical instruments, clocks, sheets, bike parts, auto parts, shells, old lanters, watches, sneakers, feathers, baskets, cookie cutters, broken radios, wooden spoons, drapery, statues, wallpaper, telephones.... etc., etc!

Clean out your basement, garage or attic and donate your junk today. Anything is interesting and acceptable. Send "treasures" in with your child.

Oaxaca Alebrije Ocarina

Students were introduced to the Oaxaca Folk Art of Alebrije wood carvings. Students created two animal creatures from Pinch, Slab and Coil. THEY ALSO WHISTLE. Yes they are Ocarinas as well. :) What an exciting and lovely gift for the holidays!

Students studied the artwork of contemporary artist Xu Bing. He used traditional Chinese calligraphy brushwork and English words to create "Word Play". Here are some student samples of their interpretation of the work using their names.
Students used Bamboo brushes, India Ink, and Parchment Paper for their final work.

Monochromatic Paintings!!

Students were asked to take a grey scale photograph and create a monochromatic complementary painting. The subject matter could be an animal or a self portrait. Most students went with an Animal. I was very surprised by the amazing talent among 7th grade when it comes to painting with Acrylic. I was also very surprised by the amazing amounts of paint I went through with this project. More than anything else - I really challenged the students to look at the color relationships and the transitions between light and shadow.
Key Ideas: Composition, Proportion, Value, Color Scheme, Contrast, Scale.

7th Grade Halloween Gelatin Scars!

Having some fun in the art room on a Halloween FRIDAY! SPOOKY!

Stride for a Cure

November is Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month. I invited my students to join me in a cancer fundraiser walk on Sunday November 2nd 2008. It was a great time and I was pleased to see two bright and smiling faces EARLY in the morning. Thank you for taking your time and walking for a good cause!

7th Grade Andy Goldsworthy Field Trip

Survival Shelters and Andy Goldsworthy! We visited a local Dog Park and worked on creating amazing survival shelters. After breaking for lunch we got straight to work on our interpretation of Andy Goldsworthy Nature Sculptures. The students were given an envelope of 3 Elements of Art. They had to use their natural surroundings to create a sculpture/composition using those three Elements. IT WAS A SUCCESS! Great job everyone!

7th Grade Bronx Zoo Trip!

The Second Year in a row and we had beautiful weather and the BRONX ZOO to ourselves (virtually). The students loved the Zoo and it will definitely be on our list of things to do next year. Students are able to learn so much from this trip. We make it a point to see every exhibit, experience every ride and area of the Zoo. Don't forget to check out the BUILD YOUR WILD SELF website! This will be handy for our Clay Lesson!

7th Grade "The BIG DRAW"

This year 7th grade watched the shortened Oprah version of Randy Pausch's "The Last Lecture". We discussed the topic of cancer, and achieving your childhood dreams. Randy Pausch (who passed away in July of this year from Pancreatic Cancer) is a personal hero of mine and I really wanted to integrate his positive philosophy in my classroom. The kids were great. We rolled out so BIG paper and DREW BIG! Students illustrated one of their childhood dreams.

7th Grade Colorful Kids!

Totally unplanned - 4 out of 5 classes at Acadia have a full spectrum along with some Neutrals!
This was brought to my attention by one of my students during my first teaching period "Mrs. Plouff we are wearing the color spectrum!" and we just continuted the trend all day.

7th Grade Digital Portfolios

They are becoming photographers! Rather than creating a large manila portfolio that takes about 2 weeks to decorate with our name and favorite things, I had asked the students if they wanted to be THE FIRST 7th grade class at our school to develop Digital Portfolios!
They were excited and started to learn how to finish a piece of art, assess their work and take a photo. On their own they are responsible for uploading their photo to a created folder on our schools shared drive. I am excited about beginning the process!!!

7th Grade Keith Haring Graffiti

Our second project of the semester is Watercolor Graffiti, this follows color theory incorporating the color spectrum. This project allows students to experiment with Graffiti font through their own research and a great site called GraffitiCreator. Students learn about giving text dimension (drop shadow) creating tertiary colors, adding a middle ground and designing a patterned background. This is a favorite among 7th grade students. Be sure to have enough cardboard to tape down watercolor paper. Each of my students is given their own board to paint on. To add some dimension and detail students are show how to paint wet on dry and use acrylic white paint to give shine effect.

7th Grade Color Theory

7th Grade starts out with Color Theory. I tell my students - "You must eat the vegetables before eating the meat and potatoes." I consider color theory to be the nutritious vegetables of dinner that are best eaten piping hot. It only makes sense. No one likes to eat cold peas.

If we get color theory out of the way as a first project we get to enjoy the rest of the meal, (the painting and sculpting). By the end of the first two weeks of school my students are REALLY SICK of using only three crayons (primary - Magenta, Cyan, Yellow) on a 7 page color theory packet that gives the students a detailed understanding of color mixing and schemes. To reward my students I bring in the COOKIE COLOR WHEEL. A hit with any age group. I have used this with 9th grade students and it is a hit with elementary. My middle school students loved the reward!

5th Grade Vincent van Gogh Portraits

5th Grade learned about Vincent van Gogh and his many styles of portraiture. Students were asked to create a proportional self portrait and use expressive color. Tempra cakes were used with a crayon resist. We cut out the portraits and attached it to a 'blackboard" background so students could write in chalk their good character traits.

Kandinsky Kindergarten Lesson

Students learned about the relationship between jazz music, shapes and colors. The kids totally got into hearing music in artclass. I was very happy with the results. Concentric foam shapes were used and handed out to the children to attempt tracing. Tempra cakes used for paint.

Color Theory

If I could send my kids home with paints to have some at home fun I would. But unfortunately I just mention color theory ALMOST every day in my classroom. I used foam board and paint. To ensure durability I laminated everything. All that you see is attached to foam board by velcro and can be moved or taken of depending upon the discussion in class. You will notice that I tend to show my addiction to color in each and every lesson. Stay tuned!
